Indian Navy Considers HAL HLFT-42 for Future Pilot Training

The Indian Navy is reportedly interested in joining the HAL HLFT-42 program, a next-generation supersonic lead-in fighter trainer, to support its procurement of the Twin Engine Deck Based Fighter (TEDBF) for carrier operations. The HLFT-42, designed for post-2030 induction, offers dual-role capabilities as a trainer and combat aircraft, featuring advanced avionics and a payload of 4.5 tonnes. With plans to procure up to 80 TEDBFs for its future carriers, the Navy’s engagement in this program underscores strategic foresight in enhancing pilot training for complex carrier operations. This initiative aligns with India’s broader aerospace ambitions, strengthening indigenous defense capabilities and potentially paving the way for export opportunities while facing global competition.
