Indian Navy Boosts Indigenous Shipbuilding with 54 Vessels Underway
The Indian Navy is accelerating its indigenous shipbuilding efforts with 54 vessels currently under construction, aiming to have 10 commissioned by December 2025 and all by 2030. This initiative aligns with the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat mission, emphasizing self-reliance, as over 80% local content is now incorporated in new platforms. The transition from a “Buyers Navy” to a “Builders Navy” signifies a strategic shift, marked by the commissioning of INS Tamal, the last major warship constructed abroad. This modernization drive enhances India’s maritime security and positions it as a key player in the Indian Ocean Region, supporting its SAGAR strategy for regional cooperation and security. The ambition to operate over 200 warships by 2035 reflects a significant leap toward becoming a major maritime power.
