Indian Navy Advances MALE UAVs and Loyal Wingman for Carrier Ops

Indian Navy is advancing its ambitions for maritime dominance by securing approval for the procurement of 87 indigenous MALE UAVs and accelerating its loyal wingman program, focusing on carrier-based and mid-air refueling operations. This follows recent Defence Acquisition Council clearances totaling ₹67,000 crore for advanced drones and related technology. The loyal wingman initiative, now centered on the development of the N-CCAV based on the Abhimanyu drone design, aims for operational synergy with India’s expanding fleet of MiG-29Ks and upcoming Rafale-M jets. These efforts, involving public-private collaboration, emphasize self-reliance and innovation, with successful prototype demonstrations and first flights targeted for 2026. The Navy’s strategic vision includes establishing a dedicated aerial refueling fleet to support a projected increase in fighter jets and strengthen the security posture across the Indian Ocean Region.
