Indian firms localize Arjun tank engine parts after MTU exit.
Indian defense firms have taken a crucial step toward self-reliance by localizing key engine components for the Arjun Main Battle Tank, overcoming a significant supply challenge. Since 2023, over 150 Arjun tank engines have been refurbished indigenously by the Defence Research and Development Organisation’s Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (CVRDE) in collaboration with private companies like Tata Advanced Systems and L&T Defence, as well as public sector units like Bharat Earth Movers Limited. This move comes after German manufacturer MTU Friedrichshafen ceased production of critical engine spares, citing the lack of commercial viability due to the limited fleet size of the Arjun tanks. The project, valued at around ₹1,200 crore, aims to produce 70-80% of engine components locally, including complex parts such as turbochargers and fuel injectors, ensuring the operational readiness and sustainability of the 1,400 HP engines powering India’s homegrown tanks. This initiative signifies India’s resolve to reduce dependency on foreign suppliers and boost indigenous defense manufacturing under the Atmanirbhar Bharat mission.
