In a landmark initiative towards sustainable defense mobility, the Indian Army has signed a contract worth Rs 130.58 crore with JBM Auto Ltd for the procurement of 113 electric buses and 43 fast chargers, marking its first significant venture into electric vehicle technology. This contract, signed on October 17, 2025, aligns with the government’s PM E-Drive programme, aimed at promoting environmentally friendly transportation solutions across India. The induction of these electric buses signifies a transformative step for the armed forces, emphasizing a commitment to reducing reliance on fossil fuels while enhancing operational efficiency through modern technology. By categorizing this procurement under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) framework, the Army not only supports the Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision but also reinforces its dedication to local defense production. The deployment of electric buses across all three services sets a precedent for the adoption of green technologies within the defense sector, showcasing a proactive approach to environmental responsibility and innovation. This development is significant as it reflects India’s determination to achieve net-zero carbon emissions and positions the Indian Army as a leader in integrating sustainable practices within its operations, paving the way for a cleaner, more self-reliant future.
