The Indian Army is advancing a major modernization drive to transform its infantry into a tech-driven, self-reliant combat force aligned with India’s 2047 defense vision. This transformation includes the induction of 25 Bhairav Commando Battalions and the establishment of Ashni Drone Platoons across nearly all 385 infantry battalions to enhance lethality, mobility, and situational awareness. Lieutenant General Ajay Kumar, Director General of Infantry, stated that five Bhairav battalions have already been operational since October 1, 2025, with the remaining units to be raised within six months. Each Bhairav battalion, comprising about 250 personnel from infantry, artillery, signals, and air defense, is tailored for high-intensity border operations with China and Pakistan, bridging the gap between regular infantry and special forces. Meanwhile, the Ashni Drone Platoons, operating about 10 drones per unit including surveillance and loitering munitions, are revolutionizing battlefield reconnaissance and precision engagement under the Army’s “eagle on the arm” doctrine. Lt Gen Kumar emphasized the Army’s commitment to self-reliance, asserting that “wars are not fought with borrowed weapons,” while highlighting collaboration with industry and academia to bolster indigenous capabilities. The broader overhaul also includes procurement of 4.25 lakh carbines and next-generation anti-tank guided missiles, underscoring a technology-empowered, networked infantry prepared for the evolving demands of modern warfare and India’s security imperatives.
