India Urgently Pursues GaN AESA Radar Upgrade for Rafale Jets

Recent reports highlight India’s urgency to upgrade its Rafale jets with advanced GaN-based RBE2 AESA radars to counter the capabilities of China’s J-20 stealth fighter. Delays in the integration of these radars, attributed to challenges faced by French manufacturers Dassault Aviation and Thales, have left the IAF with less effective GaAs radars, raising concerns about operational gaps along the eastern Himalayan border. To address this, India is exploring the integration of the indigenous Uttam MK-2 radar, which promises enhanced capabilities. This move could bolster India’s defense technology independence and set a precedent for future collaborations between India and France, ultimately strengthening India’s air combat readiness.
