India is set to enhance its air combat capabilities significantly by upgrading 200 Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter jets to near fifth-generation standards at an estimated cost of Rs 25,000 crore. This move comes in response to a fighter jet shortage faced by the Indian Air Force (IAF), which has only 29 squadrons compared to the 42 needed for effective defense against China and Pakistan. The upgrade includes installing the advanced Saturn AL-31F 177S engines and the indigenous Virupaksha AESA radar, which will significantly improve performance, including supercruise ability and detection range. This cost-effective solution is a strategic alternative to acquiring additional Rafale jets, which would be significantly more expensive. By modernizing the Su-30s, the IAF aims to close the technological gap with adversaries while promoting self-reliance in defense manufacturing.
