India to Expand S-400, Aiming to Surpass China as Top Operator
India is in advanced discussions to expand its S-400 Triumf air defense system, potentially becoming the world’s largest operator of this advanced technology, surpassing China. The Indian Air Force currently operates three regiments, with plans to acquire five additional squadrons, bringing its total to ten and significantly enhancing its air defense capabilities against threats from Pakistan and China. This move follows successful operational deployment during the recent Operation Sindhur, where S-400 units effectively neutralized airborne threats. Concurrently, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s meeting with Russian Defence Minister Andrey Belousov highlighted ongoing collaboration on advanced systems like the S-500 air defense system and Su-57 fighter jets, reinforcing the strategic partnership between India and Russia. The Reciprocal Exchange of Logistics agreement was also discussed, enhancing logistical support and operational readiness, while underscoring India’s effort to balance traditional defense partnerships amid increasing Western pressures. With these developments, India is poised to enhance its air defense architecture significantly, reflecting a broader commitment to indigenous capabilities and strategic autonomy in defense procurement.
