India to Develop Bodyguard Satellites for Space Asset Protection

India is intensifying efforts to protect its space assets by developing bodyguard satellites, following a near miss involving an ISRO satellite and a foreign spacecraft. This initiative forms part of a larger strategy that includes a $3 billion plan for 50 surveillance satellites, aimed at enhancing national security amid tensions with Pakistan and China. With China rapidly expanding its satellite capabilities, Indian officials emphasize the need for robust in-orbit protection, including potential LiDAR satellites for threat detection. The ongoing developments underscore the strategic importance of space in India’s defense landscape, reflecting a proactive approach to safeguarding its interests in an increasingly crowded and contested space environment.
