India Plans to Acquire More 40N6 Missiles from Russia for Air Defense

India is poised to enhance its air defense capabilities by ordering additional 40N6 ultra-long-range surface-to-air missiles from Russia, complementing its existing S-400 Triumf systems. This procurement, driven by recent regional tensions and operational challenges, aims to reinforce India’s strategic deterrence, particularly along its borders with Pakistan and China. The 40N6 missile, with a range of up to 400 kilometers, has demonstrated significant effectiveness, notably during a recent military confrontation where it successfully targeted a Pakistani ISR aircraft at an unprecedented distance. This move highlights India’s commitment to fortifying its air defense amid geopolitical uncertainties and budget constraints, while also navigating the complexities of international sanctions related to its defense partnerships.
