IAF to Induct 350 New Jets by 2035 to Enhance Air Power
The Indian Air Force (IAF) is advancing its modernization strategy, planning to induct over 350 new fighter jets by 2035 to address dwindling squadron strength as legacy aircraft like the MiG-21 are set for retirement by September 2025. This comprehensive plan includes 120 Tejas Mk2, 110 Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft (MRFA), and 160 Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), with the Tejas Mk2 prototype rollout targeted for 2025 and mass production by 2029. The IAF is also considering foreign jets such as the Dassault Rafale, SU-57 and the F-35 to bridge capability gaps until indigenous options are fully operational. These moves, reinforced by the Ministry of Defence and recent government approvals in late July 2025, aim to ensure credible deterrence and boost India’s self-reliance in defense manufacturing, especially in the face of regional security challenges posed by China and Pakistan.
