IAF to enhance air superiority with more Meteor missiles acquisition.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) is set to significantly enhance its capabilities by acquiring additional Meteor air-to-air missiles from European manufacturer MBDA, following the successful Operation Sindoor earlier this year. Valued at approximately ₹1,500 crore, this procurement will bolster the IAF’s long-range combat potential and reinforce its deterrence posture in the region. The Meteor missile, known for its ramjet propulsion and extended engagement range of nearly 200 kilometers, provides a strategic advantage, allowing IAF Rafale fighters to engage adversary targets well before detection. This enhancement aligns with India’s broader defense strategy to maintain air superiority amidst rising challenges from regional adversaries, particularly Pakistan’s increasing reliance on advanced Chinese missile technologies. Moreover, alongside the Meteor procurement, India is accelerating the development of its indigenous Astra MK-II missile, designed to engage targets beyond 200 kilometers, ensuring a robust and self-reliant defense capability. The combined deployment of Meteor and Astra missiles will empower the IAF to sustain unmatched aerial reach and precision, crucial for maintaining control over regional airspace in potential conflict scenarios and ensuring national security.
