IAF Supports DRDO's Ghataak UCAV with $500M Funding for Stealth Development
The Indian Air Force (IAF) has strongly backed the Defence Research and Development Organisation’s (DRDO) Ghataak Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle (UCAV) program, pushing for an initial $500 million funding to build and test four prototypes. This development was reported on October 20, 2025, marking a significant milestone in India’s quest for indigenous stealth combat technology. The Ghataak UCAV, a 13-ton flying-wing stealth drone, is designed for deep-penetration strikes in contested airspace with a low radar cross-section and internal weapons bay capable of carrying 1.5 tons of precision-guided munitions, including potential integration of BrahMos-NG missiles. Powered by the indigenous 49 kN Dry Kaveri engine optimized for stealth and endurance, it promises a combat radius exceeding 1,000 kilometers and endurance up to 8 hours. This program aligns with Atmanirbhar Bharat, emphasizing self-reliance and technology sovereignty. The IAF envisions integrating Ghataak as a key pillar in its future combat strategy, including manned-unmanned teaming alongside platforms like the Tejas Mk2 and AMCA, enhancing operational flexibility and India’s strategic deterrence. Development is progressing steadily with private sector participation and government funding support to boost domestic defense capabilities.
