IAF set to procure 6 advanced refuelling aircraft from IAI for Rs 8,000 crore.
The Indian Air Force (IAF) is set to finalize a significant procurement deal valued at approximately Rs 8,000 crore with Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) for six advanced aerial refuelling aircraft, marking a pivotal enhancement in India’s strategic air mobility capabilities. IAI emerged as the sole qualified bidder after a lengthy competition, offering to convert six surplus Boeing 767 commercial aircraft into Multi-Mission Tanker Transports (MMTT). This initiative is crucial as it aims to address the IAF’s aging fleet of Russian-origin Il-78MKI tankers, which have become increasingly serviceable challenged due to geopolitical tensions and aging infrastructure. The inclusion of a 30% indigenous content clause facilitates local industry involvement, fostering job creation and technology transfer, particularly with Indian partners like Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). The anticipated deal not only underscores the deepening Indo-Israeli defense collaboration but also significantly enhances India’s operational capabilities across diverse theatres, ensuring extended reach and responsiveness for its fighter jets. This deal could pave the way for future co-developments and is vital for India’s strategic posture in an increasingly contested Indo-Pacific region, indicating a pragmatic shift towards reliable partnerships in defense procurement.
