IAF Plans 220 Tejas Jets, Including 47 Trainers for MUMT Operations
The Indian Air Force (IAF) is set to enhance its operational capabilities with a bold plan to acquire 220 Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas jets by 2031, including 47 advanced twin-seater trainers, a significant increase from the typical squadron structure. This strategic shift towards Manned-Unmanned Teaming (MUMT) operations positions the trainers as potential motherships for unmanned combat systems, enabling enhanced reconnaissance and strike capabilities in contested environments. The ambitious procurement, spearheaded by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), aims to strengthen the IAF’s response to regional threats, particularly from China’s growing air force, while supporting India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative by fostering indigenous defense production. The integration of trainers with combat capabilities reflects modern warfare trends, ensuring the IAF remains at the forefront of aerial combat innovation.
