IAF Plans 10 Squadrons of 5th-Gen Fighters by 2040, Focused on AMCA
The Indian Air Force (IAF) is strategically planning to induct at least 10 squadrons of fifth-generation stealth fighters by 2040, heavily depending on the successful development of the indigenous Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). Currently facing a shortfall with only 31 operational squadrons against a sanctioned strength of 42, the IAF’s ambition is critical to managing potential two-front conflicts. The project timeline includes the first AMCA flight by 2028 and serial production by 2035, with additional foreign acquisitions planned to mitigate risks. This hybrid strategy aims to ensure technological parity with adversaries, emphasizing self-reliance while preparing the IAF for future combat scenarios, thus highlighting India’s commitment to modernizing its defense capabilities comprehensively.
