IAF Negotiates with BDL for 500 Astra Mk1 Missiles for Tejas Mk1A
The Indian Air Force (IAF) is in negotiations with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) for the procurement of approximately 500 Astra Mk1 Beyond Visual Range Air-to-Air Missiles (BVRAAM) to enhance its Tejas Mk1A fleet, which aims to exceed 10 squadrons by 2032. This deal reflects India’s commitment to indigenous defense manufacturing and its Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, reducing dependence on foreign missile systems. The Astra Mk1A, developed by DRDO, is crucial for bolstering India’s air combat capabilities against regional threats from Pakistan and China. Although delivery timelines may pose challenges due to production ramp-up requirements, the timely finalization of the procurement is vital for the operational readiness of the Tejas Mk1A squadrons.
