IAF Fast-Tracks Astra MkII for 2026, Plans 500-Missile Order
The Indian Air Force (IAF) is set to enhance its air combat capabilities with the Astra MkII, an indigenous Beyond Visual Range Air-to-Air Missile (BVRAAM), which aims to undergo trials in 2025 and be operational by 2026. This missile, effective against regional threats, boasts a range exceeding 160 km and advanced targeting systems, making it a cost-effective alternative to foreign missiles. Initial plans include ordering 500 units to upgrade the IAF’s Su-30MKI and Tejas Mk1A fleets, with integration on Rafale and future Tejas MkII platforms expected by 2030. The Astra MkII’s development comes amid rising regional tensions, bolstering India’s defense posture.
