IAF Extends Mi-17 Helicopter Lifespan to 40 Years, Enhances Performance

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has successfully upgraded its Mi-17 medium-lift helicopter fleet’s Total Technical Life (TTL) from 35 to 40 years through three Life Extension studies, ensuring operational reliability for essential airlift and rescue missions. These efforts, in collaboration with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and Russian partners, aim for a further extension to 45 years, highlighting India’s commitment to self-reliant defense capabilities amid global supply chain concerns. Enhancements to Time Between Overhaul (TBO) intervals for the Mi-17 V5 and 1V variants have also been realized, increasing availability and performance. This strategic initiative not only defers significant replacement costs but also strengthens the IAF’s operational readiness until next-generation platforms are introduced, reflecting a robust approach to sustainment within the evolving geopolitical landscape.
