IAF considers Su-57 acquisition, aims for Kinzhal missile integration.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) is reportedly actively considering the acquisition of Russia’s Su-57 fifth-generation stealth fighter jets, aiming to procure around 63 aircraft to form three squadrons, with deliveries potentially starting by 2028. This move is driven by a strategic imperative to counter evolving regional threats, notably from China’s stealth aircraft and Pakistan’s enhanced aerial capabilities, while bridging the gap until India’s indigenous Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) matures post-2035. Russia’s offer is particularly notable for proposing integration of the Kinzhal hypersonic air-launched ballistic missile (ALBM) on the Su-57, providing India with unprecedented deep-strike capabilities against high-value, well-defended targets from a standoff distance. Technology transfer and local production at HAL Nashik are key elements of the deal, aligning with India’s defense self-reliance goals. This potential acquisition signals a significant strengthening of India-Russia defense ties and a recalibration of regional air power dynamics. Key developments are expected around Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India in early December 2025.
