HAL to Convert HJT-36 Trainer into Light-Attack Fighter Jet

State-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is poised to transform the HJT-36 Sitara trainer into a light-attack fighter jet to enhance its export potential and meet the Indian Air Force’s operational needs. This strategic initiative capitalizes on the aircraft’s existing design capabilities and aims to attract international buyers amid a growing demand for cost-effective military platforms. With successful munitions trials and the aircraft nearing Initial Operational Clearance, HAL plans to leverage its experience from the Tejas Mk1A to integrate advanced weapons systems. This move not only bolsters India’s indigenous defense capabilities but also positions the Sitara as a versatile solution for modern combat roles, reflecting a proactive approach to defense modernization.
