HAL Revises IAF Trainer Deliveries to Three HTT-40s by FY26
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has significantly revised its delivery targets for the TEJAS MK-1A fighters and HTT-40 basic trainers for the Indian Air Force (IAF), now expecting to deliver five TEJAS MK-1A and three HTT-40 aircraft by the end of financial year 2025-26, down from previous projections of ten fighters and twelve trainers. The delays stem primarily from engine supply issues with the US-based General Electric Aerospace and Honeywell, affecting assembly timelines and critical weapon trials necessary for operational readiness. While the IAF is concerned about these setbacks amid declining squadron strength and the retirement of aging aircraft, HAL officials remain optimistic, citing improvements in engine supply rates and the establishment of new production facilities in Nashik that are expected to enhance manufacturing capacity for both aircraft types. The HTT-40, vital for training rookie pilots, and the TEJAS MK-1A, essential for bolstering the IAF’s combat capabilities, reflect broader structural challenges in India’s defense manufacturing ecosystem and highlight the urgency for timely induction of modern aircraft to ensure national defense preparedness.
