HAL considers using SaM146 engine for Superjet 100 over PD-8 due to reliability issues.
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is contemplating the use of the original French-Russian PowerJet SaM146 engine for the Indian-manufactured Sukhoi Superjet 100 to enhance reliability for local airlines, diverging from Russia’s domestically-produced PD-8 engine. This strategic decision follows a significant MoU with Russia’s United Aircraft Corporation, marking India’s first full-scale civilian jet production since 1988, catering to domestic needs and regional connectivity. The SaM146’s established track record offers operational advantages and cost reductions, while a dual-use potential could attract interest from the Indian Air Force for military adaptations. This initiative reflects India’s commitment to self-reliance in aviation through domestic manufacturing and technological resilience amid geopolitical challenges.
