HAL awaits final engine for Tejas Mk1A's October debut flight

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is poised for the maiden flight of the Tejas Mk1A in October, pending the arrival of a fourth GE F-404 engine, crucial for the Light Combat Aircraft project. Despite delays in engine shipments impacting the production schedule, HAL’s Nashik facility is prepared for the initial flight, with two aircraft ready for delivery to the Indian Air Force (IAF). The Cabinet Committee on Security has cleared a deal for 113 additional F-404 engines, facilitating the delivery of 83 Tejas Mk1As by 2029. The successful completion of weapons integration trials underscores the Tejas Mk1A’s readiness to meet IAF’s operational needs, particularly following the MiG-21 retirement, highlighting India’s commitment to strengthening its indigenous defense capabilities.
