HAL Aims for IMRH Certification by 2031 to Replace Mi-17 Fleet
In a significant advancement for India’s defense aviation, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) aims to certify the Indian Multi-Role Helicopter (IMRH) by 2031, which will replace the aging Mi-17 fleet of the Indian Air Force and Army. The IMRH, a 12-ton medium-lift helicopter, promises enhanced capabilities, including an Indo-French engine developed with Safran Helicopter Engines, emphasizing India’s commitment to indigenization. HAL plans to roll out the prototype by 2028 and initiate flight testing by 2029. With investments of ₹4,000 crore and alignment with the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, the IMRH is poised to enhance operational efficiency and reduce reliance on imports, reflecting India’s strategic aim to strengthen domestic manufacturing and bolster its defense capabilities.
