Goa Shipyard invests ₹1,500 crore in Andhra Pradesh's new shipbuilding facility.
Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Andhra Pradesh government to invest ₹1,500 crore in a greenfield shipbuilding facility, marking the company’s first major expansion beyond Goa in over fifty years. This decision is driven by increasing demand from the Indian Navy, Coast Guard, and export opportunities in Southeast Asia. The new facility, planned for Machilipatnam, aims to circumvent seasonal disruptions caused by monsoons in Goa, allowing for year-round production. Commodore Adikesh Vasudevan, GSL’s General Manager (Projects), noted that Andhra Pradesh’s proactive maritime cluster policy was a significant factor in their decision, as it provides a clear framework for maritime development not found in other eastern coastal states. The proposed facility will enhance India’s indigenous shipbuilding ecosystem, enabling the construction of a broader range of naval and commercial vessels and supporting India’s ambitions in the “Make in India” initiative and the creation of a global shipbuilding hub.
