Germany’s Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology has unveiled an innovative acoustic drone detection system that operates beyond the line of sight and excels in complex environments like urban and forested areas. This system, developed over several years under projects AMBOS and ALADDIN, complements existing detection technologies by utilizing acoustic signals to “hear around corners,” which enhances overall situational awareness for defense and security applications. With detection ranges between 50 to 200 meters and low energy consumption, it provides a cost-effective, low-maintenance addition to current drone detection networks. The broader implications of this technology are significant, as it bolsters national security measures against the rising threats posed by unmanned aerial systems.
