DRDO unveils advanced Man-portable AUVs for effective mine countermeasure operations.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully developed a new generation of Man-portable Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (MP-AUVs) designed for mine countermeasure missions, with the Naval Science & Technological Laboratory (NSTL) in Visakhapatnam leading the initiative. These advanced AUVs are equipped with Side Scan Sonar and underwater cameras for real-time detection and classification of mine-like objects, leveraging deep learning algorithms for autonomous target recognition, thereby reducing operator workload and expediting mission execution. The integration of a robust underwater acoustic communication system enhances inter-AUV data exchange, promoting better situational awareness during operations. Following successful field trials, the system is anticipated to enter production shortly, heralding a significant milestone in naval mine warfare capabilities with rapid response features and diminished operational risks, as highlighted by Dr. Samir V Kamat, Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO. This development underscores India’s commitment to enhancing its naval defense mechanisms through innovative and intelligent technologies.
