DRDO Successfully Launches Agni-Prime Missile from Rail Launcher

India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), in collaboration with the Strategic Forces Command (SFC), successfully conducted the launch of the Intermediate Range Agni-Prime Missile from a rail-based mobile launcher on September 24, 2025. This advanced missile, capable of striking targets up to 2,000 km away, features a canisterised launch mechanism that enhances its mobility, survivability, and rapid deployment capabilities. The use of a rail-based launcher allows for cross-country mobility and can facilitate launches from various locations within India’s extensive railway network, thus complicating enemy targeting efforts. This launch marks a significant milestone in India’s strategic deterrence capabilities, positioning the country among select nations with such advanced mobile launch systems. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh highlighted that the successful test reflects India’s commitment to self-reliance in defense technology, a key pillar of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. The Agni-Prime complements India’s existing Agni-5 missile, which has a longer range exceeding 5,000 km and is designed for strategic deterrence with its MIRV (multiple independently targetable re-entry vehicle) capability. Together, these systems enhance India’s defense posture, providing both regional deterrence and long-range capabilities. The successful demonstration of the Agni-Prime not only underscores India’s growing technological prowess but also reinforces its ambitions to be a key player in the global defense manufacturing landscape, showcasing the nation’s advancements in indigenous military technologies and its commitment to forging strategic partnerships.
