DRDO Prioritizes Netra MkII Over 360 Rotodome AWACS Program
The DRDO has deprioritized its 360 rotodome AWACS program in favor of the Netra MkII, which offers sufficient 300 degree radar coverage for the Indian Air Force (IAF). The Netra MkII, developed on the Airbus A330 platform, enhances endurance and performance, supporting India’s urgent surveillance needs amid growing regional threats. Factors influencing this shift include operational adequacy, cost-effectiveness, and rapid deployment requirements, aligning with India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. While the 360 rotodome concept remains a possibility for future development, the immediate focus on the Netra MkII bolsters India’s airborne early warning capabilities against adversaries like China and Pakistan.
