DRDO Enhances Photonic Radar Tech for Advanced Surveillance Systems

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has made significant advancements in photonic radar technologies, aiming to enhance air defense and surveillance systems through the integration of advanced photonics. This initiative focuses on improving bandwidth, resolution, and electromagnetic resilience by utilizing optical components for radar signal processing, effectively overcoming the limitations of traditional electronic systems. Key developments include photonic signal generation, a Wavelength Division Multiplexing-based distribution network, and multichannel receivers, with successful proof-of-concept demonstrations for a photonic multi-band radar transmitter. This project aligns with India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, promoting indigenous innovation and bolstering domestic capabilities in complex optoelectronic integration, thus redefining the landscape of radar warfare and surveillance.
