DRDO Enhances Astra Mk-2 Range to 200km+, Plans 700 Su-30MKI and Tejas Orders
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is set to enhance India’s air combat capabilities by extending the range of the Astra Mk-2 air-to-air missile to over 200 kilometers, surpassing its previous range of 160 km. The Indian Air Force plans to order approximately 700 units, intended for integration with the Sukhoi Su-30MKI and Tejas fighter jets. This strategic upgrade aims to counter China’s PL-15 missile, providing Indian pilots with a standoff capability to neutralize threats without entering enemy engagement zones. The Astra Mk-2, featuring advanced indigenous components, underlines India’s commitment to self-reliance in defense, significantly bolstering its aerial defense posture and reducing reliance on foreign missile imports.
