DRDO Enhances AFV Capabilities with Advanced Electric Drive System

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is advancing India’s armoured fighting vehicle (AFV) capabilities by developing an advanced electric drive gun control system, integrated into its Integrated Automotive Vetronics System (IAVS). This innovative system, featuring a 28VDC permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM), significantly enhances turret maneuverability and gun precision while eliminating traditional hydraulic systems, thus improving reliability in extreme conditions. The initiative supports India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat commitment by emphasizing indigenous manufacturing, targeting 70% local content in vetronics subsystems. This modernization is crucial for enhancing the operational efficiency of India’s AFV fleet, particularly in high-altitude regions, and forms a key part of India’s strategy to maintain a technological edge against peer-level threats.
