DRDO Develops Signal Star Naval Flare for Kalvari Submarines

In a significant advancement for India’s defense capabilities, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully developed and handed over the indigenous Signal Star Naval Flare, specifically designed for the Kalvari-class submarines. This dual-colour signaling device enhances operational readiness by enabling reliable non-verbal communication for distress signaling and coordination during submarine missions. The flares can emit red for emergencies and green for operational status, crucial in maintaining stealth and ensuring crew safety in submarine warfare. Developed by the High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL), this initiative reflects a mission-mode project aimed at achieving self-reliance in defense technology under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, reducing dependency on foreign suppliers and enhancing India’s strategic autonomy in naval operations. The successful induction of these flares not only strengthens India’s underwater warfare capabilities but also signifies a critical step towards achieving technological sovereignty and boosting indigenous defense manufacturing, highlighting DRDO’s role as a key innovator in equipping the Indian Navy with advanced, homegrown solutions tailored to modern operational demands. This landmark achievement positions India as a formidable blue-water navy, enhancing its deterrence capabilities and operational efficiency in maritime domains.
