In a significant move to address the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) airlift shortfall, the Defence Ministry is set to issue a tender for up to 80 Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) with a payload capacity of 18-30 tonnes. This program, aimed at replacing the ageing Antonov An-32 and Ilyushin Il-76 fleets, underscores India’s commitment to self-reliance in defense manufacturing. Major global players like Embraer, Lockheed Martin, and Airbus are vying for the contract, each proposing indigenous manufacturing partnerships.
