CVRDE Evaluates Cummins Engine as Interim Solution for Arjun MBT
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is addressing a critical powertrain shortage for the Arjun Main Battle Tank (MBT) fleet due to the cessation of MTU engine production, which has halted logistical support. As an interim measure, the Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (CVRDE) is reassessing the Cummins QST-30 engine, which, despite requiring structural modifications for integration, offers a reliable and locally available alternative. This pragmatic solution bridges a capability gap until the fully indigenous 1,500 horsepower DATRAN engine can undergo user trials, slated for 2025-26. This strategic move emphasizes India’s commitment to enhancing its indigenous defense capabilities and achieving technological self-reliance in armored mobility systems, reinforcing the nation’s resilience in defense readiness.
