Cummins plans local production of VTA903E-T760 engines for Zorawar Light Tank in India.

Cummins Inc. is advancing plans to manufacture the VTA903E-T760 engines in India for the DRDO’s Zorawar Light Tank, aligning with India’s push for self-reliance in defense. This 760 hp turbo-diesel engine, crucial for high-altitude warfare, complements an indigenous 800 hp variant developed by CVRDE and Ashok Leyland, set to replace foreign dependencies. While Cummins aims to deepen localization and generate jobs, the Ministry of Defence’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative emphasizes 70% local value addition, favoring indigenous production. The strategic pivot towards self-sufficiency in defense capabilities is vital amid evolving geopolitical tensions, enhancing India’s operational resilience and fostering collaboration within its defense ecosystem.
