China's New Tanks Prompt India to Accelerate Armored Vehicle Development

China’s recent military parade showcased advanced armored vehicles, including the Type 99B and Type 100 tanks, reflecting the People’s Liberation Army Ground Force’s (PLAGF) focus on networked warfare and enhanced mobility. The new systems emphasize a shift towards lighter, more maneuverable tanks, an adaptation influenced by lessons from the Russia-Ukraine conflict. In response, India is expediting its Future Ready Combat Vehicle (FRCV) program to replace aging T-72s, aiming for prototypes by 2027 and production by 2030. This development underscores the urgency for India to innovate and modernize its armored forces to maintain a strategic edge against evolving threats along its borders, particularly amidst increasing military capabilities in neighboring China.
