On October 10, 2025, Europol, in collaboration with law enforcement agencies from Austria, Estonia, and Latvia, successfully dismantled a significant SIM-box network known as “SIMCARTEL.” This operation revealed that the network was implicated in over 3,200 fraud cases, leading to estimated losses of approximately €4.5 million. Utilizing 1,200 SIM-box devices and 40,000 SIM cards, the operation facilitated phishing, investment scams, impersonation, and extortion, allowing the creation of more than 49 million online accounts. Such cybercriminal activities not only undermine individual security but also pose serious risks to national telecommunications infrastructure, highlighting the importance of international cooperation in combating organized cybercrime.
