DRDO's Project Dhvani: Hypersonic Glide Vehicle with Agni Booster

India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) continues to advance Project Dhvani, a hypersonic glide vehicle launched via an Agni-series ballistic missile booster, capable of exceeding Mach 5 speeds and offering an operational range of 6,000 to 10,000 km for enhanced strategic deterrence. Featuring a blended wing-body wave-rider design approximately 9 meters long, low radar cross-section for stealth, ultra-high-temperature ceramic composites enduring 2,000-3,000°C re-entry heat, and precision inertial navigation with satellite guidance, the project builds on Hypersonic Technology Demonstrator Vehicle successes. A full-scale model was unveiled at the Vigyan Vaibhav exhibition in Hyderabad on February 28, 2025, with maiden flight tests scheduled for early 2026 following rigorous ground validations, targeting full induction by 2029-30 amid regional security imperatives. This indigenous breakthrough underscores India’s self-reliant defence posture, positioning it competitively against global hypersonic systems.
