BJP asserts India's sovereignty, rejects foreign interference in internal matters.
The BJP has condemned New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s interference in India’s internal affairs following his note in support of Umar Khalid, an activist charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act for his alleged role in the February 2020 Delhi riots, which resulted in 53 deaths. BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia emphasized that India will not tolerate external comments on its sovereignty and legal matters, asserting unity among Indians under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. Concurrently, a group of US lawmakers, including Representatives Jim McGovern and Jamie Raskin, has expressed concern over Khalid’s prolonged detention and urged for a fair and timely trial in line with international law, citing principles of democratic governance shared by both nations. They acknowledged recent developments, including Khalid receiving temporary bail to attend his sister’s wedding, and requested transparency regarding the judicial proceedings against him and co-accused individuals. This situation highlights the complexities of India’s internal security issues against the backdrop of international scrutiny, raising questions about the balance between national sovereignty and human rights.
