External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar visited Dhaka to convey condolences from the Indian government on the passing of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, who died at the age of 80 after a prolonged illness. Jaishankar met with Tarique Rahman, Zia’s son and acting chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), and handed over a personal letter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressing confidence in the future of India-Bangladesh relations. In response to Zia’s death, Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus announced a three-day state mourning and a one-day general holiday, urging citizens to maintain order during the funeral proceedings. Zia, a significant figure in Bangladeshi politics and a proponent of democracy, is remembered for her contributions to the nation and its ties with India. Her passing marks a pivotal moment, potentially influencing the political landscape in Bangladesh, especially with the forthcoming elections in 2026, as both nations seek to reaffirm and strengthen their partnership during this transition.
