India greenlights Dulhasti Stage-II project amid Indus Treaty suspension.

The Indian government has approved the 260-megawatt Dulhasti Stage-II hydropower project on the Chenab River in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district, following the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan. This decision allows India to advance multiple hydroelectric projects in the Indus basin, as the treaty, which previously governed water sharing, is now in abeyance. The Dulhasti Stage-II project, which builds upon the existing Stage-I facility, involves significant infrastructure, including a lengthy tunnel for water diversion and an underground powerhouse. This initiative underscores India’s commitment to enhancing its energy capacity while navigating complex geopolitical dynamics in the region.
