Congress leader claims India was defeated on Operation Sindoor's first day, sparking political controversy.

Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan has stirred controversy by claiming that India was defeated on the first day of Operation Sindoor, which was launched in response to a terror attack in Pahalgam. During a press conference, he asserted that Indian Air Force (IAF) aircraft were shot down and that the Air Force was “completely grounded” due to the threat from Pakistan, questioning the need for large military forces in future conflicts that he believes will primarily be aerial in nature. Chavan’s remarks have drawn sharp criticism from the BJP, which refuted his claims, emphasizing that the reports of downed aircraft have been misrepresented. The Indian defense establishment maintains that Operation Sindoor, which occurred from May 7 to May 10, successfully neutralized over 100 terrorists, reinforcing the operational effectiveness of the IAF despite Chavan’s comments. This debate underscores ongoing discussions about military strategy in an era increasingly dominated by air power, while also reflecting the political tensions surrounding defense narratives in India.
