India Critiques Pakistan's Governance, Jailing of Imran Khan, and Military Power Grab
India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Harish Parvathaneni, delivered a robust critique of Pakistan’s governance during a recent Security Council debate, condemning Islamabad’s handling of democracy, which includes the jailing of former Prime Minister Imran Khan and the passage of the 27th Constitutional Amendment that grants lifetime immunity to the Chief of Defence Forces, Asim Munir. Parvathaneni characterized Pakistan’s actions as a “constitutional coup” aimed at consolidating military power at the expense of democratic norms, while also rejecting Pakistan’s claims regarding Jammu and Kashmir as a strategic distraction from its internal crises. He emphasized India’s resolve to counter Pakistan-sponsored terrorism and underscored that Jammu and Kashmir, along with Ladakh, remain integral parts of India. The discussions coincided with international scrutiny over Khan’s detention conditions, alleged human rights violations, and Pakistan’s broader political instability, framing Islamabad as a destabilizing force in the region. The significance of this exchange at the UN underscores India’s diplomatic strategy of exposing adversaries’ vulnerabilities while reaffirming its territorial integrity, further complicating the already strained India-Pakistan relations against a backdrop of ongoing geopolitical friction.
