AMCA Mk2 induction delayed to 2040 due to engine validation issues.
India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) Mk2 program faces delays, with induction now projected for 2040 due to extended timelines for the indigenous 120 kN engine, developed in collaboration with France’s Safran. The initial ground run of the engine is now scheduled for 2032, delaying subsequent aerial trials and certification. To mitigate potential gaps in the Indian Air Force’s capabilities, options such as increasing AMCA Mk1 procurement and retrofitting Mk2 airframes with the existing GE F414 engine are under consideration. The situation underscores the critical role of propulsion in fifth-generation fighter development, highlighting that successful integration and validation of the new engine are essential for realizing the AMCA Mk2’s full capabilities.
