India starts second Nicobar airfield to enhance military readiness and monitor critical shipping routes.
India has commenced groundwork for a second airfield at Chingen, near Galathea Bay in the Nicobar Islands, strategically located to monitor the critical shipping routes between the Indian Ocean and Southeast Asia. This dual-use facility, estimated at ₹8,573 crore, will bolster military readiness alongside civilian connectivity, enhancing India’s geopolitical presence amid China’s expanding influence. The project will integrate with the existing INS Baaz naval base, allowing for improved surveillance and rapid response capabilities. Environmental safeguards have been implemented to address potential ecological concerns, ensuring that national security imperatives are balanced with sustainability efforts. This initiative not only reflects India’s commitment to military modernization but also strengthens its position in the Indo-Pacific, promoting regional stability and deterrence.
