India and Brazil discuss naval collaboration and defense capacity building.

India and Brazil are strengthening naval ties through high-level discussions during Indian Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi’s official visit to Brazil from December 9 to 12, 2025. Tripathi met Brazilian Defence Minister Jose Mucio Monteiro, Chief of Joint Staff Admiral Renato Rodrigues de Aguiar Freire, and Navy Commander Admiral Marcos Sampaio Olsen to review maritime cooperation, enhance operational linkages, and explore joint initiatives in hydrography, training, and maritime domain awareness. A key outcome was the signing of a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding on December 10 between the Indian Navy, Brazilian Navy, and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd., focusing on exchanging maintenance information for Scorpene-class submarines—platforms both nations operate—to improve life-cycle support, logistics, training, and joint R&D. The visit included tours of naval bases and shipyards to assess co-production potential for surface vessels, aligning with the India-Brazil Strategic Partnership and President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s planned 2026 trip to India for further defence agreements.
