India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is enhancing the Smart Anti-Airfield Weapon (SAAW) by developing a jet-powered variant that extends its strike range beyond 200 km, significantly boosting the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) long-range precision strike capabilities. This upgrade transforms the SAAW into a self-propelled missile, allowing IAF aircraft like the Sukhoi Su-30 MKI to engage targets from a safer distance, minimizing risk from enemy air defenses. The new variant features advanced targeting systems, ensuring high accuracy and effectiveness against both fixed and moving targets, and aligns with India’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative by promoting indigenous defense production and reducing reliance on foreign technology.
